Are there any genetic or environmental links, including personal choices that may increase the risk of getting this type of cancer?
- Previous cancer treatment. People who’ve had certain types chemotherapy and radiation therapy for other cancer treatments have an increased risk of developing some kind of leukemia.
- Genetic Disorders. Genetic abnormalities also has a role in the development of leukemia. Certain genetic disorder, such as down syndrome, are associated with an increased risk of leukemia.
- Exposure to certain chemicals. Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene, which is found in gasoline and is used by the chemical industry- this also increases the risk of some kind of leukemia.
- Smoking. Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of acute myelogenous leukemia.
